Method and Madness: Making Sense of The Current Biomaterials Landscape
Time: 2:40 PM, September 11, 2026
Speaker: Dr. Clinton D. Stevens
Current restorative trends would strongly suggest that dentistry is anything BUT an evidence-based profession. The now ubiquitous use of monolithic zirconia and coming wave of 3D printed “permanent” restorations are hardly based on sound scientific data, much less the rational application of thought towards what an ideal restorative material ought to be. The purpose of this lecture is to examine the range of indirect restorative materials available to the 21st century clinician, identify their advantages and limitations, and suggest clinical application strategies for maximum predictability.
Learning objectives:
- Monolithic Zirconia - Definitely NOT the most biocompatible ceramic in dentistry.
- High Strength Glass Ceramics - Manufacturers’ marketing departments making a mess.
- 3D Printed “Crowns” - The good, the bad, and the ugly of an emerging technology.
